Celebrating 40 years of Meerlust wines!

published on: Monday, 16 November 2015

The South African Wine industry really is coming of age and Meerlust, being an icon of SA Wines, is forging ahead of the pack. I was honoured to celebrate their 40th year of wine-labels with their team on Friday 13 Nov, 2015. Owner Hannes Myburgh, a most gentle man is the 8th generation on the farm. He has a dedicated team with Cellarmaster Chris Williams having been on the farm for 18 years, Roelie Joubert, the vineyard manager, has also taken on a herd of Nguni to add to his responsibilities! We were treated to a selection of older wines from the farm - including a surprisingly drinkable 40-year old Cab, and a 1995 Rubicon. My favourite was the 2009 Cab. Interesting to note how the alcohol levels over the years has risen from 11% in 1975 to 14.5% now. The Essence of Meerlust really is apparent in the down-to-earth delicious lunch we shared with a few media and the team in Hannes' kitchen. There is some change happening at Meerlust and we were treated to a viewing of one of the oldest buildings on the farm being renovated. Hannes will be adding his inimitable touch to the furnishings and decor and it will be an interesting accommodation addition to the winelands.
